Welcome Becky
and Hannah!
Becky and Hannah, female
elk from Elk County Elk Farm, arrived at ZOOAMERICA in
2007. Born in June 2005, they are 2 years old. You can
see Becky and Hannah along with our 8-year-old bull, Nubs,
in the Big Sky Country section of the zoo.
Elk are the most vocal members of the deer family.
Cows bark alarm signals, calves bleat and squeal, and bulls
bugle. Elk live in herds where at least one elk will always
have its head up, scouting for predators. This provides
protection for individual elk and the herd.
Kira comes to Hershey!
Please join us in welcoming
Kira, a 9-year-old bobcat from Turtleback Zoo in West Orange,
New Jersey! She came to ZOOAMERICA in July. You can see
her on exhibit with Dillon, our 14-year-old male, in the
Eastern Woodlands section of the zoo.
Bobcats are medium-sized
cats that get their name for their short, bobbed tails.
They are similar to the Lynx, but slightly smaller, and
have a ruff of fur on the sides of the face. Bobcats mostly
prey on rabbits, but will also prey on rodents, birds,
and even deer.
