Dale Snyder,
Naturalist

Dale Snyder

  Q: What is your job?
A: I am the General Curator.

Q: How did you decide to become a naturalist?   A: It just kind of happened. I had planned to be a teacher, and I worked summers at a petting zoo, and that led to a position at ZOOAMERICA.

Q: How long have you worked at ZOOAMERICA?   A: I have worked here since May, 1978.

Q: Why did you choose to work at ZOOAMERICA?
A: I grew up on a farm and always enjoyed being around animals, and I liked teaching other people about them.

Q: How did you learn so much about animals?
A: I learned a lot while I was working, I read a lot, and I enjoy being outside in nature whenever I can.

Q: Is it hard to work in a zoo?   A: Some hard work is required. There are long days when you have to care for the young and sick, dragging rocks around to make exhibits look natural, and sometimes there are days when I have to do a lot of paperwork.

Q: What is your favorite animal?   A: I like the raccoon and the pumas.

Q: What is the best part about working at a zoo?   A: I get to be around animals, and I get to show them to other people.

Q: What is the most interesting thing you have seen at the zoo?   A: We rehabilitated an otter pup that just had plastic surgery to fix an injured lip.

Q: Are your animals friendly?   A: Some of them are, but some are very shy, and some can be very dangerous.

Q: Do you have animals at home?   A: Yes, I have three cats, one chinchilla, a guinea pig, three snakes, a large African tortoise, and over one hundred mice!
